With the lid/opening that lets in steam, you can mix hot liquids, and also add ingredients in the middle of mixing. The blending wand also fits through this opening in the lid, it has a 'plastic collar' which means that when used through the opening in the lid it never comes into contact with the blades, making it safe to use. Vitamix jugs purchased separately have a 3-year warranty.
